HOW OUR ORGANIC FARM AROSE
We decided to move from Rome to our casale at Torre
Colombaia (a family property since 1860) in 1987, as an effort to
make something ecologically real, i.e. to save 320 acres from pollution
and chemical agriculture (after so many, often frustrating, demonstrations
against nuclear weapons, nuclear plants, euromissiles, Berlusconi,
and so on).
Our Eco-Farm is protected by a large secular wood –
owned for centuries by Benedictine friars. Old local peasants still
keep memory of traditional agricultural techniques.
So we began to
plant again lentils, spelt, flax, old kinds of wheat and sunflower,
to mill them in a stone-mill, to make our organic sunflower oil, to cook meals
according to old local recipes, etc. Now we offer to our visitors a
corner of countryside from where you do not see any house or city
in your 360° horizon, but only fields, meadows, old oaks, no noisy
swimming pools but a natural pond.
